Chapter Seven

The party became more irritating the longer it went on. Roman checked the bronze mantle clock. It wasn’t even ten o’clock yet. How would he survive the night? He was holding court in the living room area by the tree so that he wouldn’t have to interact with every single person who pranced through his home. Maude had left several minutes before to seek out Louise and to get some food. She hadn’t returned, and he was a bit put out with her for that.

She knows how much I hate being left unattended, and surrounded by, for all intents and purposes, complete strangers.

Of course, Trixie had arrived with her new date, and he had watched with amusement as Marvin Holst—Mrs Holst on his arm—glared at Trixie, who glared back just as menacingly.

Another Hollywood match made in hell.

Everyone was there from the studios, even the would-be usurper Will Carmichael. He had brazenly shown up stag. Roman wondered what his story was. It was obvious he was a lover of men, but Roman had heard nothing about any involvements he might have.

What is the point of working at that putrid studio if there is not even any decent gossip?

He should have gone with Maude. Where there was Louise, there would be Jack. But then Vincent might have one of his little fits, and truthfully, Roman had absolutely no interest in being caught up in the crush of people—and near the loud music no less. How Jack must be hating that.

Fuck. Again I am an idiot.

Jack’s nerves would never be able to stand the insanity of the party. The poor boy was already feeling sickly. It would be too much for him. Roman knew his lover all too well. It had been Jack’s bad nerves that had led to their fateful meeting. Roman smiled despite himself. The group sitting around him that had been blathering on endlessly stopped as he rose from the long couch—the same one where Jack had presented him with the Guy Rose painting the week before. That thought threatened to arouse him in a very public manner, so he focused back on his goal of seeking out Jack.

“If you will all excuse me, I need to make sure that the staff is keeping the banquet tables filled.”

“Aw, Roman, don’t go. Stay here with us a little longer.”

A cute redheaded flapper with bow lips and freckles batted her eyelashes at him.

She can’t be serious.

He was sure she had introduced herself, but he couldn’t remember a thing about her. A very fey young man sat next to her. His hair was a striking platinum blond, and he was probably not much older than Jack. He stared intently at Roman, doing his best to convey exactly what it was that he wanted from Roman.

A poor substitute for my sweet Jack.

“Yes, Roman. We would love it if you would stay. Maybe I could make it worth your while?”

Roman actually felt his stomach turn. Mere months ago, a suggestion such as that would have had Roman scheming how to get the young man into his bed as soon as possible.
